HOPE Free Psychiatric Clinic - Voluntary Community Psychiatry Experience

HOPE clinic logo

The HOPE Free Psychiatric Clinic (Healthcare Outreach for Psychiatric Excellence) was started by Nina Bihani M.D. (Class of 2023, CAP Fellow) and Astian Ayoola D.O. (Class of 2024) in 2023 after they identified a gap in care for many of the psychiatric patients in the Detroit community. Since Dr. Bihani has graduated, Aubrey Neal (PGY3) has graciously picked up the torch to help with this project.

Mission: Many of the patients seen in our hospital crisis centers struggle with homelessness, low income, and poor support. This leads to poor access to the psychiatric care they need for stability. This in turn sends them down a path of constant decompensation and repeated visits to the ER. The goal of the HOPE clinic is to address some of that need and improve access to psychiatric care. The clinic has partnered with Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries to be able to provide psychiatric care to the clients in their shelters. The goal is also to coordinate primary care services with the SAY Clinic which is a Beaumont resident-run family medicine clinic.

All patients cases are staffed with attending psychiatrists. PGY1s can volunteer while on psychiatry rotation, if paired with a senior resident.
